The Autism Treatment Evaluation Checklist (ATEC) was designed to assist parents, physicians and researchers to evaluate treatments for autism. The Autism Research Institute (ARI) offers a free internet scoring procedure that calculates several important scores. The higher the scores, the more impaired the subject (your child). You can use a code number rather than name if you are worried about sharing private information. You can get a copy of the ATEC here.
If your child has recently been given a diagnosis of autism you can usethe ATEC to document your child's autism symptoms PRIOR to begining any treatments. Be sure to fill out a new ATEC form after you make any treatment changes. This will help to figure out what treatments are working and will help ARI document the effects of these treatments on many children with autism. If you have seen any of the signs of autism you should fill out an ATEC form to record your ASD child’s starting or baseline score and bring the form to your child's next doctors visit. This kind of documentation will help the doctor understand that you are not just imagining these autism symptoms.
Be sure to be very honest on the ATEC, you do your child no favour by exaggerating their skills. Once it is filled out, you can go to the ARI website and fill in the information. They will score the information and send you a report. IN our eBook Conquer Autism we provide the benefit statistics calculated by the ARI for all of the most common autism treatments. These numbers tell you the percentage of children that benefit and give information on how well each of the treatments work (or don't work).
