| | | Autism and Diet One of the most common problems in autism is a severe sensitivity to dietary proteins found in wheat (gluten), dairy (casein) and soy products. This sensitivity is not a food allergy. It results from the inability to properly digest these proteins. Improper digestion can lead to severe and painful irritation of the digestive system. If these undigested proteins enter the blood stream they act like an opiate (such as heroin or morphine) causing a "drugged" or "out-of-it" state in your ASD child. During the testing phase, you will find out if your ASD child has this common problem. If they do, you will need to put them on a gluten/casein/soy free diet. This diet can be a real challenge. We provide all sorts of information to help you get started with it, such as our favorite products and a list of things to avoid at the grocery store.
