When the root of the problem is known, drugs can solve the problem and cure the disease. Prescription drugs can have some use in treating autism and ASDs, especially in controlling seizures and self-injurious behaviors. Many of the most effective ASD treatments require prescription, such as chelation drugs, anti-fungal drugs, and injected vitamin B12. In your struggle to conquer ASD you may be offered prescription drugs to manage your child's autism symptoms. These may have use, but you need to understand they do not address the root cause of the disease and can mask symptoms and thus interfere with your assessment of the biochemical treatments you are implementing. We review the drugs most commonly prescribed to manage autism symptoms and provide benefit statistics when possible. As you will see, most of these drugs have few beneficial effects and many serious negative side effects. You will ultimately have to decide whether to include them in your ASD battle plan. This way you will know what the drugs are designed to do and how they compare to other treatments.
