| | | Secretin Secretin is a hormone released by the gut. It stimulates digestion by regulating acidity as well as having effects on the pancreas, which produces digestive enzymes. One theory of how it helps in autism and ASsD is that it decreases intestinal permeability, countering the often leaky gut. Several studies have confirmed that secretin does act in this way. Other studies have shown secretin specifically activates the part of the brain responsible for social interactions (the amygdala). Secretin treatment has always held out hope because it has been miraculous for some kids, with dramatic increases in language and sociability.
